ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My intent is to develop a body of work that speaks of the human journey, maturation and a feminine aesthetic. By using deliberate marks of sheer and opaque color throughout the composition I am developing personal dreamscapes of nonrepresentational qualities. My primary application of layering colors and textures is meant to create a playful and beautiful composition through juxtaposition. However, each application creates nuances that become more apparent with further study, much like how individuals evolve through periods of development. I initially break down the composition into stages with blocks of singular color, then as the stages or layers build and associate with one another each piece is able to express more distinction in texture and variances in tone. Establishing trends of how each fragmented piece works with the next and can be capable of affecting the theme on a larger scale.
My pieces range from somewhat traditional color field paintings to single process and multi-process prints. Influences are a fusion of the abstract expressionist genre, including Helen Frankenthaler, Mark Rothko and Richard Diebenkorn to more contemporary abstract artists such as Gerhard Richter and Caitlin Lonegan. With a stronger emphasis on technique and application I commonly use squeegees, silkscreens and large palette knives to spread buttery thick layers of acrylic or gouache in organic blocks or expressive marks over varying surfaces. As part of the process, I am very conscientious of constructing a feminine aesthetic and continuing to pay careful attention to the selection of colors and the organic nature of the application; including the negative space that is created in the surrounding exterior. Thus expressing the fluidity of a moment and blurring barriers.
